Weather-Related Postponements - Incl Threat Of Bad Weather As Opposed To Actual Bad Weather

When a game is unplayable due to bad weather prior to the game's scheduled start time (usually at least two hours), it is the home team's obligation to declare a weather-related postponement by informing their opponent w/o delay and by updating the game status online for that game.

    (A) "Normal" Weather Postponement (as opposed to threat of bad weather)

    (1) Games should not be weather postponed till the day of the game when actual and forecast weather conditions are better known. On the day of the game, any game can be postponed at ANY time prior to the scheduled start time, w/o penalty, if ACTUAL weather conditions have made it impossible to play the game as scheduled or with a delay of one hour or less.

NOTE: With the exception of LDT games, weather postponements can be declared by the home team only.

EXCEPTION: For LDT games, the AWAY team has the prerogative of declaring the game a WP if the local weather forecast calls for storms or probability of heavy rain of 50% or greater from 2 hours before start time till 2 hours after the scheduled start time. For more info, see below: (B) Weather Postponement - Due To THREAT Of Bad Weather.

SUBMITTING WP TO THE WEBSITE - Up until the scheduled start time on the day of the game, only the home team can enter a weather postponement on the website. However, after the scheduled start time, a smart icon will appear on the away team's schedule, allowing it to weather postpone the game if the home team failed to do so.

PROTOCOL FOR OPPONENT NOTIFICATION --- Actual Bad Weather

    (a) HOME TEAM - Call your opponent (primary contact) and notify him of the postponement decision as soon as it is known that the game can not be played. If you can't reach the primary contract, try the secondary contact. Do NOT email your opponent to notify him, as time is of the essence on the day of the game.

EXCEPTION: If nobody answers the phone, you may send an email as proof that you tried to notify your opponent but he failed to answer his phone.

NOTE: To obtain contact info for any opponent, simply go to your online schedule and click on the opposing team's name.

    (b) HOME TEAM - After calling your opponent, go to your team's online schedule and find the game to be postponed. Click on the weather postponement icon and follow the prompts.

Once this is done, the game will appear as postponed on both teams' schedules and the website will auto-email all coaches/players of both teams to notify them of the change in game status.

IMPASSE - Teams have seven days to reschedule a Weather Postponed game. When the parties can not agree on a reschedule, either team can declare an IMPASSE via the Update Game Status link any time up till 7 days after the scheduled date of the game. If the game status is not updated by then, the system will automatically declare an IMPASSE (no penalty). An IMPASSE declaration will prevent the game from becoming PASSED. Should both parties agree to reschedule the game at a later date, either party can add the make-up game to their schedule as a new game by using the ADD GAME function on every team's schedule page.

    (B) Weather Postponement - Due To THREAT Of Bad Weather

To postpone a game w/o penalty due to the THREAT of bad weather or unplayable fields:

DEFINITION: Threat Of Bad Weather - where the local weather forecast calls for storms and/or probability of heavy rain of 50% or greater anytime from 2 hours before the game's start time till 2 hours after the scheduled start time.

(1A) HOME TEAM - must contact the VISITING team NO LATER THAN 2 hours before the scheduled start time.

PROTOCOL FOR OPPONENT NOTIFICATION --- Threat Of Bad Weather

    (a) HOME TEAM - Call your opponent (primary contact) and notify him of the bad weather threat and your recommendation for a "proactive" weather postponement decision as soon as it is known that a bad weather situation is likely in the time frame encompassing 2 hours before/after the game's scheduled start time.

    (b) If the VISITING team agrees to a weather postponement, the procedure for a normal weather postponement is followed.

HOME TEAM - After contacting your opponent, go to your team's online schedule and find the game to be postponed. Click on the weather postponement icon and follow the prompts.

Once this is done, the game will appear as postponed on both teams' schedules and the website will auto-email all coaches/players of both teams to notify them of the change in game status.

    (c) If the VISITING doesn't agree to a weather postponement on the basis of threat alone, it has the right to insist that the game be played, weather permitting, with one important proviso: it is now the VISITING team's responsibility to pay both ump fees and any field rental fees if the first game is rained out before it is an official game.

    (d) If the VISITING team elects option (c), and the HOME TEAM refuses to comply, the VISITING team may claim a forfeit win. If a DH is scheduled, both games would be forfeited.

    (e) If the VISITING team elects option (c) and the HOME team fails to show up with nine uniformed legal players, the VISITING team may claim a forfeit win. If a DH is scheduled, both games would be forfeited.

(1B) AWAY TEAM - For LDT games only!

    (a) AWAY TEAM - This is the only situation where the AWAY team has the prerogative of declaring the game a WP if the local weather forecast calls for storms or probability of heavy rain of 50% or greater from 2 hours before start time till 2 hours after the scheduled start time. However, AWAY team must inform his opponent's primary or secondary contact of this decision at least two hours before game time and by phone, speaking directly to that person (messages/emails don't count). The home team must then cancel the umps w/o delay to avoid having to pay them. If contested later by the home team, the away team must be able to provide proof of the bad weather threat to the league.

    (b) After calling your opponent, and after the game's scheduled start time has passed, the AWAY team should go to its team's online schedule and find the game to be postponed. Click on the weather postponement icon and follow the prompts.

Once this is done, the game will appear as postponed on both teams' schedules and the website will auto-email all coaches/players of both teams to notify them of the change in game status.

The above policies/protocols, like so many of the policies/protocols adopted by ENYTB, are designed to encourage members to show courtesy and respect to each other in all things. In this case, by providing timely notification re: weather postponements. A great deal of effort goes into the logistics of getting travel teams to an away field, on time, ready to play. We don't want away teams going to games only to find out later that the home team had postponed the game due to bad weather or the threat of bad weather w/o giving them timely notification.

  • Weather Postponements, Make-Up Games and IMPASSEs
  • Discretionary Postponements i.e., games postponed not because of bad weather but because one team is unable to play as scheduled.
  • No Harm/No Foul Cancellations and Forfeits
  • One game of a doubleheader was completed but not the other, how do I record this on my schedule?
