    How Do Berths Get Awarded?

    ===================================================================
    NOTE: With the advent of RML's Tournament Manager, and the transition to the March Madness Qualifier format, ENYTB tries to award berths via the website, based on confirmation by the accepting teams. However, situations where that is not possible may arise. If they do, berths shall be awarded at a tournament berth meeting held by the league. When this happens, a team must have a team rep in attendance to claim a berth. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
    ====================================================================

    Before the season begins, and before the league schedule is constructed, teams are placed in divisions based on their registration choices. For example, if you have a 14U team and your registered for AABC14, NABF14 and PONY14 NCTS, your team should be placed in a separate REGULAR standings for each as well as a Tournament Division for all three combined.

    These STANDINGS are constructed before scheduling begins. It is up to each team to verify that it has been placed in all of its proper STANDINGS based on its registration with the league.

    Each year, ENYTB qualifies for a certain number of berths for each sanctioned tournament based on league registrations and other factors. These berths are earmarked to specific STANDINGS. Berths earmarked to REGULAR Divisions are awarded to teams based on the RESULTS OF LEAGUE PLAY DURING THE REGULAR SEASON. Berths earmarked to QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT (QT) Divisions are awarded to teams based on their order of finish in the QT. The QTs include teams registered with different sanctioning bodies. Some teams may be registered with all of the sanctioning bodies for which the QT is applicable whiles are not. Teams not registered with all sanctionings would only be eligible for those sanctioned NCTS that it is registered with. For example, if a team choose to be PONY and NABF sanctioned, and the tournament is a QT for PONY, NABF and AABC, that team is not eligible for the AABC NCTS berths.

    For some STANDINGS, usually only AABC Regular, one or more berths may be "earmarked" to specific competition levels e.g., Hi Silver or Low Silver, while others are available equally to all teams in the STANDINGS, regardless of their competition level, as "Wildcard" berths. Where the number of berths or registered teams in certain competition levels aren't sufficient to justify earmarking individual berths to specific competition levels, all berths linked to a REGULAR Division are awarded as Wildcard berths i.e., regardless of team's competitive classification.

    A team can win only one berth to the same tournament but, if two tournament series do not conflict or if the first tournament series begins at least one week before the other tournament series, teams can accept berths to two or more sanctioned tournament series. In such cases, if the team wins a sanctioned tournament it must advance in that series. If that causes a conflict with the other sanctioned NCTS for which it had accepted a berth, it must give up its berth(s) in the latter (when this possibility arises, an alternate team will be designated ahead of time using the same approach described herein).

    See Standings > Divisional Tie-breakers for an explanation of how ties are broken within each division.

    Each STANDINGS has a final play date shown in its heading. Berths are usually awarded the next, based on the final order of finish. Earmarked berths are awarded first. Then Wildcard berths.

    Any team with three or more non-playing forfeits within the same REGULAR STANDINGS:
    • Shall lose its berth eligibility in that STANDINGS;
    • However, it shall retain eligibility for the Qualifier Tournament via the divisional standings marked "Tournament", provided it has less than five non-playing forfeits overall.
    NOTE: Unplayed games, including PASSED games and any games not played before the cutoff date are not counted as non-playing forfeits. When warranted by weather conditions or other unusual factors, the League President may extend the cut-off date for a standings by a day or so.

    Any team with five or more non-playing forfeits overall, shall lose its eligibility for all competitive berths in all divisions, including TOURNAMENT Divisions.

    BERTH DECLINATIONS:

    Earmarked Berths - An earmarked berth stays in the same competition level provided an eligible team with a non-SoS adjusted record of 500 or higher claims it. The berth is offered to teams according to their official order of finish in that STANDINGS. If there is no eligible team in the same competition class with a record of 500 or better that wants to claim the berth, the berth is reclassified a Wildcard berth and awarded consistent with the official order of finish for all teams in the STANDINGS, once all earmarked berths are awarded or reclassified.

    Wildcard Berths - Are awarded based on the official order of finish. If a team declines a wildcard berth, that berth is offered to the next highest finishing team in that STANDINGS, regardless of its competition level.

    ============END OF DESCRIPTION OF CURRENT SYSTEM===================
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    ============BEGINNING OF DESCRIPTION OF OLD SYSTEM=================

    Prior to 2009/2010, ENYTB used a more disaggregate approach to STANDINGS and berth awards. All information below pertains to procedures under that system.

    This information is preserved in case the league ever decides to use that approach in part or in whole in the future. Thus, unless you are just curious, there is no reason at this time to read the material below.

    Top Berth In A Division - When a team declines the top berth in a division or fails to show up to claim the top berth at the berth awards meeting, the berth is offered to the next highest qualifying team in that division, provided that team has a divisional record of .500 or higher, and has no forfeit losses or unplayed games in that division.

    If all qualifying teams in a division pass on the berth, it shall be offered to the next highest qualifying gold division team provided the gold team has an OVERALL record for ALL ENYTB games played of .500 or better. Should no Gold team qualify and accept the berth, the berth will be offered to the next lower division(s), including wildcard divisions, in the same manner.

    NOTE: Overall win percentage, not total points, will be used to determine the qualification order for berths that were declined by all 500 or better teams in a division.

    If this process doesn't result in a qualifying team accepting the berth, the procedure will be repeated with the exception that 500 or better requirement will be removed. If this still doesn't result in a qualifying team accepting the berth, the procedure will be repeated with the exception that the forfeit limit will be waived.

    Divisional Berths Other Than The Top Berth - Any divisional berth, other than the top berth in a division, when declined, shall be offered to the next highest qualifying gold division team provided the GOLD team has a divisional record of .500 or higher, and has no forfeit losses or unplayed games in that division. Should no Gold team qualify and accept the berth, the berth will be offered to the next lower division(s), including the wildcard divisions, in the same manner.

    NOTE: Overall win percentage, not total points, will be used to determine the qualification order for berths that were declined by all 500 or better teams in a division. If a strength of schedule factor is used in a division, it shall be used to determine the ranking of teams but 500 percentage qualifier shall be based on the team's raw win percentage.

    If this process doesn't result in a qualifying team accepting the berth, the procedure will be repeated with the exception that 500 or better requirement will be removed. If this still doesn't result in a qualifying team accepting the berth, the procedure will be repeated with the exception that the forfeit limit will be waived.

    Order of Berth Awards - "Regular" Divisions first, beginning with Gold, then Silver (first high silver then low silver) and finally Bronze. Berths are then awarded to Wildcard Divisions. If there is more than one Wildcard Division, berths are awarded in the following order: Gold, G/S, Hi Silver, HS/LS, Lo Silver, LS/B and Bronze.

    Sometimes, not often, teams appear in multiple regular divisions under the same affiliation and age group. When this happens and a team qualifies for a berth in more than one "regular" division, the berth division is determined in the following manner:

    (i) Divisional placement e.g., team finished 1st in one division and 2nd in another - it gets the berth from the division it finished 1st in.
    (ii) Relative performance - most points ahead of next highest eligible team or fewest points behind 1st place team (on a percentage basis);
    (iii All must play games are scored and there are no forfeit losses;
    (iv) Highest win percentage,
    (v) Most wins,
    (vi) Fewest losses (forfeits count double),
    (vii)Least average runs allowed.

    Above tie-breakers are used to determine which regular division the berth is awarded from.
